I pulled the hood of my cloak down low, casting my face in deeper shadow as I stepped out from beneath the protective canopy of the Forgotten Forest. The pre-dawn light barely illuminated the deserted dirt road into town, and not even the farmers and ranchers were up yet. Which was exactly why I’d picked this time for my little trip into town.

I just needed to pick up a few ingredients we were running low on. Fenn hadn’t exactly been excited about the idea, and I could hardly blame him. Going into town, especially when that ridiculous noble was still looking for me, was foolhardy. But the pantry was dangerously low, and although I supposed we could’ve survived on whatever Fenn could catch in the forest, our cooking sessions together were special to me.

And it wasn't like everyone in Verdain knew my face. So all I had to do was keep my head down. I squared my shoulders and set off down the dirt road, towards the edge of town, Fenn right beside me.

Fenn’s shoulder playfully bumped into mine, his own face shrouded in shadow from his hood. He hadn’t been to town in many years, especially not dressed as a commoner, but it was still better to be cautious. Fenn twined his fingers through mine and gave my hand a little reassuring squeeze.

Happiness bubbled up through me at his thoughtfulness. Last night had been so magical, I’d wished it would never end. That memory I tucked away, close to my heart. The feather the emerald-eyed Vulclaria had gifted me was safely hidden beneath my shirt. I’d used a bit of wire to securely attach it to my crescent moon pendant. I’d also strapped my dagger to my thigh. After that surprise visit from a shadow assassin, I’d taken to carrying it with me wherever I went. We were just lucky that Dorent could be bought off and redirected with a bag of gold. Well, more like several bags of gold.

My breath formed a misty cloud in front of me and the chill in the air nipped through my cloak with ease. It only took us a few minutes to reach the edge of town.

We slipped through a narrow alley between two houses, cautiously winding our way through alleyways and side paths. We managed to avoid the main street, where there was a much higher chance of running into someone who might recognize one of us.

By the time we reached the market, my nerves were a frayed mess. Once he’d made sure the area was safe, Fenn went over to the blacksmith’s shop alone to acquire a whetstone and some polish, since two hooded figures would garner unwanted attention. The first rays of dawn cast my figure in deeper shadow as I opened the front door, the bell ringing to alert the clerk to my entrance.

A groggy woman shuffled out from the back, where she'd undoubtedly been organizing the day’s fresh deliveries for sale. At least she didn’t look askance
